19 In The Rear View Mirror

We were stopped at a red light. I fell in love with you all over again watching you in the rear view mirror today.

You are only 19 months old but I can already see the teenager in you. The grown man you'll be when your heart will be taken away from me and given to someone else.

You are so incredibly perfect. I still thank our God throughout the short (very short),quiet moments of my day for you. YOU!

How did we get here? I was trying to remember what you were like as a two week old today and I couldn't.

I couldn't remember because all that is in my head are thoughts of you now. Today.

The little boy who spent 45 minutes running back and forth on the couch last night giving Mommy and Daddy kisses. The one who said "nigh night" for the first time on Sunday and who now says it each time I lay you down. Who always starts out using a big boy spoon for his cheerios.....but then resorts to using his dirty little fingers....I know, it's much more fun fishing for your cereal. My child who can now walk up 5 steps without holding on to any rails and then turns around to smile the biggest "I'm-so-proud-of-myself-smile".

Your hair is the most magnificent color I have ever seen. It's in between a light brown and red. Auburn maybe? That just doesn't sound as beautiful as it truly is.

Your eyes are always wide (so wide) and bright. It's as if the sun was put in the sky solely to reflect in your eyes.

And those toes! I know I always mention the toes, little man. You have your Daddy's toes and I could seriously eat them daily. But neither you, nor your Daddy will let me come close to your sweet, chubby feet. So ticklish. I can't even look at your Dad's feet.

I want to share some things about you, right now, at 19 months that make me smile.

You love black olives.....I know, I know....every child likes to stick 'em on the ends of their fingers, but you actually eat them! Sliced, diced, or whole...you would eat an entire container if I let you. But I don't, because then there would be none left for me....and I have a slight obsession as well.

You love Sunday mornings. It's like you anticipate going to sleep each Saturday night, because you enjoy your Sunday mornings with Daddy so much. The two of you can whip up a batch of pancakes like nobodies business. I can't believe I don't have any pictures to show! You stand on your chair at the island and help him pour in the water and stir and mix till your little arms give out. Then he lets you put in the "magic" ingredient that only you and Daddy can know! ;) You make "special"
little man pancakes for you and we eat them up.....never any leftovers.

You are ticklish. I thought your Daddy was bad but no sir, you are the silliest! It's getting so bad that I can barely wash your little body in the bath tub or put lotion on you. You just squirm and giggle and squirm some more!

You eat only "big people" food now. I was still buying those pasta pick ups and toddler meals from Gerber last month, but you've finally decided enough is enough. All you want to eat is what Mommy and Daddy are having. Santa Fe salad?? Bring it. Fish tacos?? I'll have seconds, please. Such a little man!

Grayson, I look at you and see all my favorite parts about you only getting better and better. I do not long for you to be little again because I just love who you are right now so much it hurts.

Happy "19"!!!
